Type remembered words or use Ask How I Did It to search aloud. Browse all your guides or by category, and open Why this matched to see what helped a result appear.
Find Clues in Your Media
Words visible in saved photos and words spoken in voice recordings or videos can help you find a guide. Recognition happens on your device when available.
Keep Your Manuals Together
Add PDF manuals from Files, give them useful titles and record the manufacturer or model. Read and zoom through pages, or search for a phrase, setting or error code and open the matching page.
Ask a Manual
When the required Apple model is available, ask a question about a saved manual and check the source pages behind the answer. Useful suggested steps can become a draft guide for you to review.

Use More Ways to Create to choose a PDF and find relevant pages. When automatic guide creation is available, review the suggested steps and add full-page or cropped reference images before saving.
Follow One Step at a Time
Check Before You Start, then move through each step with its photos, voice or video. Keep Screen Awake helps while you work, and success notes or a photo show the result to look for.
Remember What Still Works
Confirm a guide after it works. Verified, Not Yet Verified and Changed Since Verified record its status. Keep preparation notes and Things That Didn’t Work so useful details stay with the guide.
Update a Guide as Things Change
Edit or reorder steps, update notes and replace media. When appropriate, the app keeps one Last Working Version for reference while you update the current instructions.
Share or Print a PDF
Create a readable PDF of a guide to save, share or print. Choose whether to include photos and Things That Didn’t Work. Voice and video can contribute recognised text when available.
Share a Guide with Its Media
Send one guide file using your device’s sharing options. Import Guide adds a separate guide without replacing your library, ready to check and confirm on your own setup.
Keep an Extra Copy
Create a complete backup of your active guides, media and saved manuals in a Files location you choose. Recently Deleted keeps deleted guides recoverable for 30 days unless you remove them permanently. If two synced devices change the same part differently, the app asks which version to keep.

Your guides stay useful without a connection
Keep reading and updating your guides without a connection. Pending changes remain safely stored on your device until iCloud Sync can continue. Saved manuals can also be read and searched offline; manual answers and draft generation depend on Apple model availability.
Across your Apple devices
Keep your guides up to date
Optional iCloud Sync keeps your guides available across your Apple devices. Changes are saved on your device first and begin syncing while the app is open. The app also checks for updates when you open it or return to it.
Private by design
Your guides stay under your control
Your guides are saved on your device first. Optional iCloud Sync uses your private iCloud account to keep supported data and media available across your devices. There is no separate SKAV account, no advertising and no analytics.
Text recognition in photos and recognition of spoken words in voice recordings and videos are handled on your device. Saved PDF manuals and their searchable text also stay local, and complete backups include the saved manuals.
Enhanced Manual Answers is on by default. When available, Ask This Manual may send your question and relevant manual pages to Apple Private Cloud Compute. Turn it off in Settings to use the on-device Apple model when available. Backups are saved to a Files location you choose.

How are guide search and Ask a Manual different?
Search my guides and Ask How I Did It find information in guides you already saved. Ask a Manual works with a saved PDF and can suggest an answer with source page references when the required Apple model is available. Check the original pages and review any suggested guide before saving or following it.
What if automatic manual answers are unavailable?
Manual answers and automatic draft guides depend on device, language and Apple model availability. You can still read and search saved manuals and create your own guides. Suggested or imported guides start as Not Yet Verified until you confirm that they worked for you.
Do saved manuals sync between devices?
Manuals and their search data stay on the device where you added them; they do not sync automatically. A complete Backup & Restore file includes saved manuals. Adding or deleting a manual does not change the original PDF in Files.
Can I share a guide or print it?
Open Guide Actions and choose Share Guide to send a guide file with its media, or Share & Print for a readable PDF. Import Guide in Settings adds a shared guide as a new, separate item. A PDF is a reading or printing copy; it does not play the original voice or video.
What should I check if iCloud Sync is not up to date?
Open Settings and read the iCloud Sync status. If it says Needs Attention, follow the choice shown there. If the issue continues, include the device models and operating system versions in your support message.
How do Backup & Restore and Recently Deleted differ?
A complete backup is a file you create and keep in a Files location you choose. Recently Deleted keeps deleted guides in the app for 30 days unless you delete them permanently.
What if a photo, voice note or video is missing?
Check the guide and Storage Dashboard first. Keep any working backup unchanged while you investigate, then contact support and tell us what you see on screen.
Which devices are supported?
How Did I Do That? works on iPhone and iPad, and can run on compatible Apple silicon Macs. Contact support if you need help with a particular device or operating system version.
